How to do a barbell overhead press

Use a steady range and keep each rep controlled from start to finish.

  1. 01

    Set the bar at shoulder height

    Use a rack if available. Take a balanced stance and grip the bar just outside shoulder width.

  2. 02

    Brace before pressing

    Rest the bar near the upper chest, keep your wrists steady, and brace your trunk and legs.

  3. 03

    Press overhead

    Move your head back just enough for the bar to pass, then press until the bar is overhead and your arms are straight.

  4. 04

    Lower to the start

    Guide the bar back to shoulder height under control, keeping your stance and trunk steady.
